The target user is two-sided. Ordinary Mac users can contribute spare compute with little setup. Advanced users can join through the repo and technical setup, which currently requires serious hardware for deeper participation.
What is usable today: Mac app, docs, FAQ, hardware guide, dashboard, paper, and repo. What is incomplete: cross-platform availability, commercial packaging, enterprise pricing, verified customer proof, and independent usage numbers.
Closest alternatives: Prime Intellect, Gensyn, Flower, and Together AI. IOTA appears stronger in consumer-level access through a Mac app; weaker in commercial clarity and platform breadth.
IOTA is a real public product with a downloadable app and open technical stack. It is valuable for ordinary users who want to join open AI training from a Mac, but still early as a commercial training platform.
